What is STANDBY Power?

What is "STANDBY" power?

You often see diesel generators rated for different types of applications. The most common is "standby" power.

Standby power is the maximum power available from the generator. It does not mean you can use it at that rate continuously. The average load should not exceed 70%. You need to leave enough room for devices that need more power to start-up. A fridge, freezer, motor, compressure are examples of these.

Sizing the generator correctly and understanding what standby power is, will help make sure it can operate your generator trouble-free.

Exceeding standby ratings will often result in it over heating. Prolonged overload will cause circuit breakers to trip and possible generator damage if ignored for a long period of time. Most generators can handle some overload for short durations but it should be avoided.
