Changing the oil filter is really easy on a portable diesel engine like the Yanmar 186 diesel motors BUT there are something you need to know.

Watch for the little o-ring on the oil filter and make sure it is not pinched or damaged in anyway. If your oil filter does fit all the way into the engine you will have problems. Many people who find it is not inserted in all the way report that the engine runs for a few minutes then develops low oil pressure and safely turns itself off. This is what it should do when there is a loss of oil pressure.

If the seal is bad then it sucks in air, may drip when not in use or cause a oil passageway inside the engine to be blocked resulting in low oil pressure.

This video shows what it looks like from the inside of the engine to help better understand how it works and what can go wrong.
